On the last neighborhood safety walk I participated in—admittedly, some weeks back—we walked past this building, and it had a realtor's sign in the window, but this is the first time I've seen it actively listed. The current listing enthuses that it would be "perfect real estate for (a) tax office, salon, office," but what would you like to see there? Personally, I think a great little gastropub with outdoor seating would be just right for the space, and it would be lovely to have a roof terrace topping off the building.

I'd love to have a salon in the neighborhood.
I agree that a pub would be a welcome addition. If that proves unfeasable, perhaps a new and used children's clothing and toy store? It seems there are so many babies and toddlers in the area now.
a police substation
Does anyone see the need for a 24 hour bike cafe serving healthy treats for cyclists, joggers, yoga goers, and the like. Selling clothes, shoes, bikes and doing tuneups. With free wifi, dinner or breakfast served anytime of the day. I think the police may frequent this kind of place too. It may be quite useful, Thoughts?
I'd like a strip club, personally. To counter-act all of this cracker gentrified BS stuff everyone else is suggesting.
I wish you transients and others would move all the way back to Nebraska where you came from.
You wouldn't even want a pub? Everyone likes pubs! Also, I'm originally from Massachusetts, not Nebraska. Go Minutemen!
anon 3:38,
would be great, but not at that location.
anon 10:52,
just try and run the strip club by the old folk here in the hood. see how with it you are then. wake up time. young and angry is not what its about.
@ Pat - you're still a transient and if you live in our neighborhood and white, then you are more likely well to do, as most gentrifiers are.
I don't like pubs, I like bars. I like bars and lounges.
@Seat-On - I've been living here for 20+ years in Ledroit Park (and actually, before people started making a big deal out of this and calling it 'bloomingdale'. I grew up on Hanover during the Rayful Edmond days. Are you familiar with that? Here's the kicker - I am the only white person who lived here during that time. it was myself and my family. I can't remember ONE other white person living here.
Now, ya'll are moving in, putting yoga in, coffee shops, sucking up all of the 'culture'. What's next? You want to put in a pottery barn? What other pretentious stuff can we come up with?
Man, this place isn't what it used to be. I enjoyed it. My property taxes used to be like a quarter of what it is now.
But yeah, strip clubs. We could use one - that has some bootiful chocolate women:) No flat pancake butts.
fantastic to see that you've picked up some of the crazy anti- commenters on the blog, elle!
it's funny that they would say it's perfect for a tax office, given that there was a tax office there and they couldn't survive. i would say that proves that this is perfect for anything but a tax office.
Oh, you expect everyone to be for the gentrification and destruction of a neighborhood, imgoph? ...and if they don't agree with that, they're "crazy" and "anti"?
The truth is, I want to see good things happen to this neighborhood too, but not at the expense of the people who've been here for years.
anon: please, please, please, tell me how introduction of a tax-paying business into what is currently a vacant commercial space would in any way, shape, or form "destroy" the neighborhood. if you can convince me or anyone else of that, i will cede this argument to you for good.
i'm not convinced that you can pull that off, though.
the whole "i loved this neighborhood when it had crime issues and now you people are ruining it by coming in here and being friendly and neighborly" argument doesn't hold water.
white anon guy, you didnt get out much if you think you were the only white person.
nice chip on your shoulder though. you carry it typically.
imgoph calls you crazy because you simply attack people and cast bigoted disrespect around the internets. you think you're fighting the noble fight, but you just sound like an ass that pushes people away from listening to you, despite the valid points you have.
you do two things, you come across just as another white guy that knows better than everyone else, and you foster bad vibes for others that grew up here.
